The Appleby Horse Fair is one of the oldest fairs in Britain. It dates back to the reign of James II who in 1685 granted a Royal Charter to the town permitting it to hold a horse fair. Since then it has been a popular annual event for traders and travellers to meet and buy and sell horses and ponies. The event is held over four days on the outskirts of Kendal on what is known as Fair Hill and the event is celebrated with music, folklore and street entertainment. Here you will witness horses being driven down the flashing lane; traders selling equine wares whilst down in Appleby itself horses can be seen being washed in the River Eden ready for their prospective buyers.
