York is one of the best preserved medieval cities in Europe, the rich history of York stretches out before you as you walk along the city's walls and narrow shopping lanes. The area where the Jorvik Viking Centre is situated was excavated in the 1970's and visitors can now take a tour of the homes, shops and streets found by the archaeologists. Standing out above all is York Minster, the largest Gothic Cathedral in England, whilst close by is the medieval shopping street known as “The Shambles”, one of the best preserved medieval streets in the world.
